Luna (Watership Down Sanctuary)

Luna’s life began with two years of serious neglect. From the very start of his days, he was subjected living in a cage far too small for him where he would go weeks on end covered in his own excrement. Luna was frequently fed harmful foods like crackers and bread, which can cause an increase in harmful bacteria in rabbits’ digestive systems - sometimes resulting severe illness or death. Sweet Luna was malnourished and treated poorly, and when Watership Down’s founder Ryan James came to rescue him, Luna was emaciated with splayed legs and a miserable life. As Ryan explains, “When I heard about him, I tried to help the people he was living with at first. When I saw they wouldn't change, I decided to take him out of there.”

Luna has taken to his new life full of love and safety since he arrived at Watership Down. He has been cared for and fed properly, and now he even has a fellow rabbit to love. According to Ryan, “A month after Luna arrived in my care, I rescued another bunny named Roxy. Roxy fell in love with Luna, after the other rabbits rejected him. So they have been a bonded pair and together most of the time since she arrived.” Luna and Roxy were slowly accepted by their companions after the arrival of a few other rabbits, and Luna is now the happiest of all of the residents of Watership Down. Now at a healthy weight, Luna’s legs are beginning to straighten, and he joyfully runs about the sanctuary flicking his ears in thanks for his second chance.

Ryan is happy to report that, “[Luna] has flourished more than any bunny here because of proper care and love. To this day, he is the most friendly and loving bunny here.”

Little Luna found his sanctuary at Watership Down.
