Tinsel and Holly (Rooterville)

Holly and Tinsel were born to be auctioned off at just a few days old. It is likely that Tinsel was intended to become a veal calf, while Holly would have gone on to become a dairy cow; soon after their births, they were taken from their mothers and prepared to be sold. Before they could be auctioned, however, they became so weak and sickly that they could barely stand. According to Rooterville, “Dairy cows are rarely allowed to nurse their young, so their mothers couldn’t provide the nutrients these young calves needed to give them a good start in life.” Holly and Tinsel were thrown onto the so-called “dead pile” and abandoned. Luckily, New York’s Farm Sanctuary stepped in and rescued both calves, giving them immediate attention and healthcare. Thanks to that attention, both Holly and Tinsel regained their strength and were ready to see what life had in store.

Now, Holly and Tinsel spend their time relaxing Rooterville Sanctuary in Melrose, Florida. They’ve come a long way from their first Christmas at the farm – at two thousand pounds, Tinsel is now always on the lookout for someone to scratch his chin or give him a banana! Holly is happy being Tinsel’s constant companion, and together, they have the chance to live in safety together for the rest of their days.
